Researchers at Canterbury Christ Church University found that acupuncture benefits patients with Schizophrenia when used alongside conventional treatment, according to this small, preliminary study.
Participants were given a 10-week course of acupuncture and were evaluated using multiple quantitative and qualitative assessments before, during and after the acupuncture intervention.
All of the treatment participants reported positive benefits as a result of acupuncture, including improvements in the symptoms of schizophrenia, side effects of medication, energy, motivation, sleep, addictions and other associated physical problems.

Researchers at Kyung-Hee University in Seoul, Korea measured cerebral blood flow while needling the acupoint DU20.

DU20, found on the top of the head, is frequently used to treat conditions of the head and brain including dizziness, stroke, paralysis, unclear thinking, anxiety and headache, as well as many other disorders including prolapsed organs, habitual miscarriage, fatigue and infertility.

PET scans of the brain reveal that true acupuncture has different effects than “sham acupuncture” and touch on the human body.
Findings from a recent study suggest that acupuncture is effective in assisting with weight reduction in obese individuals. The study, authored by Dr. Edward Lamadrid, a Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, reports that 95 percent of its subjects lost weight in a six-week period after receiving regular acupuncture treatments. Of those subjects, another 50 percent continued to lose weight after treatments stopped.
“What’s particularly interesting and somewhat shocking about the study’s findings is that weight loss occurred across the board without much exercise or dieting, something everyone believes is essential to trimming down”, said Dr. Lamadrid.
From the Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, obesity is often due to weakness in the digestive and metabolic systems (Spleen/ Stomach and Kidney) of the body. Acupuncture can help to strengthen digestive weakness and boost the body’s metabolic functions, thus assisting with weight loss and improving overall health.
